HISTORY OF THE SAVANNA GOAT
The South African Savanna goat, has a rich history that can be traced back to the mid-1900s. Originating in South Africa, these goats were initially bred for their meat production, which quickly gained popularity due to their excellent meat quality and ability to adapt to harsh environmental conditions. Through careful selection and breeding practices, the breed was developed to exhibit desirable traits such as high fertility, rapid growth rate, muscular conformation, and resistance to diseases.
Savannas arrived in the USA on the famous CODI/PCI flight, leaving an indelible mark on the history of exotic imports. Jurgen Schultz, an esteemed exotic entrepreneur, brought over a plane full of Boer goats, and tucked away within the confines of this flight were a mere handful of South African Savannas, an exciting novelty at that time. Upon their arrival, Jurgen carefully nurtured these original South African Savanna goats, taking them to his exotic zoo nestled in the heart of Texas, where they resided for a couple of years under his watchful eye. Paying great attention to detail, Jurgen documented each goat meticulously and recorded the offspring they produced while thriving in the zoo's secure haven. Finally, in late 1999, after establishing a strong and healthy lineage, Jurgen proudly offered these original Savannas to the public, captivating Chevon enthusiasts and curious animal lovers alike at a highly anticipated dispersal sale. These animals would later be commonly referred to as the JCS imports. There would go on to be three more successful Savanna exports from South Africa of genetic material, following Jurgen's landmark achievement. However, it is worth noting that his endeavor remains the only time live animals from South Africa have been brought into the country to date. This significant feat is now even more remarkable, as recent changes in federal laws have barred the importation of both live animals and genetic material from South Africa to the United States.
Today, the South African Savanna goat has not only become renowned for its meat production but also for its adaptability, making it a valuable breed in various countries around the world. Savanna goats have experienced remarkable development over the years, gradually establishing themselves as a highly sought-after breed. Originating from South Africa, these goats were specifically bred for adaptability and their ability to thrive in harsh environments. Through a meticulous selection and breeding process, breeders have successfully enhanced the Savanna goat's tolerance to disease & parasites, its overall hardiness, and its impressive meat and milk production capabilities. As a result, the breed has gained popularity worldwide, particularly in areas with challenging climatic conditions. The development of Savanna goats has not only contributed to sustainable agricultural practices but has also provided farmers with a profitable and resilient livestock option for their operations.
